Moments of Hope

Knitted Knockers: Comfort with Compassion

How will I sing in my church choir?” one of our members asked after her mastectomy. Like many others, she was worried about feeling and looking unbalanced after surgery. It was during this time of shared vulnerability that we discovered Knitted Knockers through friends at Hope Cancer Resource in Arkansas, USA..

Knitted Knockers are soft, handmade breast prostheses crafted from yarn – breathable, beautiful, and comfortable alternatives to traditional prosthetics. Thanks to generous volunteers, we’ve made these right here using locally available materials. We are forever grateful to Caren, Sophie, Kalondu, Ruth, and our beloved Juliet (may she rest in peace) for bringing this dream to life.

Today, each member is gifted a Knitted Knocker (if they wish) as part of their post-operative recovery package – a small gesture that carries a big message: you are whole, you are beautiful, and you are supported..

Mat Making: Healing in Every Stitch

What started as a simple craft shared by Sister Agneta blossomed into something much more. With Juliet’s encouragement, we gathered with crochet hooks in hand and love in our hearts to create colorful mats. Men and women, caregivers and volunteers – all found joy and healing in this shared experience.

In these circles, we laughed, we cried, and we connected. The mats weren’t just made of yarn – they were woven with stories, hope, and resilience. We weren’t just making mats; we were mending spirits and stitching bonds of sisterhood and support.

Research Participation: Our Voices Matter

Our group is rich with lived experience, and we’re honored to contribute to research that improves cancer care in Kenya. We’ve participated in several meaningful projects, including:

  • Prostate Cancer Survivors Study – helping men and families understand genetic risks and treatment paths..
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Tool Design – reaching over 700 people across Kisii County through community education.
  • The Witness Project Kenya – amplifying women’s voices in early detection and awareness of breast and cervical cancer.

Through it all, we’ve proven that our stories are not only powerful – they are necessary.

Community Awareness: Sharing Our Strength

Having walked this journey together, we now feel called to give back. Through awareness campaigns, we educate our communities on recognizing cancer signs early, understanding treatment options, and embracing survivors with love and dignity.

We are proud to partner with organizations like the Kisii County Department of Health, Oasis Healthcare Group, Association of Breast Surgery, and Know Your Lemons. Together, we’re building informed, compassionate communities – one conversation at a time.

“Spa” Day: Celebrating Our Inner Beauty

Cancer treatment changes our bodies, but not our spirit. Our spa days are about reclaiming joy, confidence, and laughter. Together, we paint our nails, try on wigs, apply makeup, and most importantly – we smile.

These special days include our daughters, sisters, nieces, and friends. They’re not just about beauty – they’re about feeling alive and loved. And who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll hold a beauty pageant to showcase the radiance that shines from within us a

Breast School: Understanding Our Unique Journeys

Many of us wondered: Why am I not on daily medication like others? Through “Breast School,” we learned that breast cancer is not one-size-fits-all. Each diagnosis is unique, and every treatment journey is personal.

In these sessions, we explored the many types of breast cancer and the different treatment paths – from daily hormone therapy to targeted treatments like Herceptin, to cases where surgery might not be needed. This understanding empowered us to take ownership of our health and feel confident in our care.

Happy Birthday to Us!

What’s better than cake, songs, and laughter? Every birthday is a reason to celebrate – and as Martha Cancer Survivors, we never miss a chance to honor each other.

We sing, we dance, we share sweet moments and even sweeter treats. These celebrations remind us that life after cancer is full of joy, connection, and new beginnings. Happy Birthday to us – again and again!
